(i am suppose to be doin my assignment!)
so, thanks to Fahmi Reza, hartal is no longer a term which is foreign to most people.
hartal is actually a mass protest often involving a total shutdown of workplaces, offices, shops, courts of law as a form of civil disobedience. In addition to being a general strike, it involves the voluntary closing of schools and places of business. (wikipedia)
thats like a total brief definition of what hartal is. you can probably find a better one. (i am just too lazy…) and hartal is not a new thing in malaysia. in 1947, there was an all-malaya. it worked. everyone stayed at home and no shops were open.
so why am i even writing about hartal? what does it have to do with anything?
Internal Security Act. ISA.
so just a few days ago, 3 people were arrested under this stupid act. Raja Petra (a blogger), Teresa Kok (MP) and Miss Tan Hoon Chen (journalist) were arrested for insulting Islam, the prophet, and creating racial tension. Miss Tan has been released. The arrests has nothing to do with any of the things that I have mentioned above. The government is just using this to divert everyones attention from the so-called 916 crossover, which is something that a lot of people have been looking forward to as they feel like change is finally here. a form of revolution. i mean the same party has been ruling the government for the past 50 years and things are really fucked up. so yeah, a lot people are looking forward to it. new government, new policies, abolishment of isa, osa, press act, uuca, and many other fucked up acts.
anyways, the use of isa is fucked up. its detention without trial. and it is against humyn rights. and it has been used way too many times. the government love to use this whenever theres a crackdown. ops lalang is one example. whenever they feel like theres a crackdown, isa is used.
so what do we do? candle light vigil? press conference? and wait. wait for them to be released which is like what, 2 years. meanwhile, we burn candles to show solidarity. hmmm….
so here comes hartal. since we love to have peaceful protest, lets hartal. hartal is one of the most peaceful one. stay at home. dont go out. nothing is more peaceful than hartal. of course it would need everyone to do it. so do we hartal on sept 16?
it feels like a good idea to me. then again it need to be organized well and information has to disseminated well. i am sure people are fired up and pissed with the way that the government is using isa to detain people for no reason.
also go to haris ibrahim’s blog. they are also discussing the idea of hartal there.
for more info on hartal in malaya, you can watch 10 tahun sebelum merdeka.
* i personally dont believe that the new government will do all those things.not everyone believes in the crossover and the system. these are from my personal observations, discussions, and reading.
